Horror movies have always been a popular genre for the Hollywood movie industry. Give a horror flick a good title, bombard the public with a blood-curdling trailer and chances are pretty darn good that theater seats will consistently fill up.
Unfortunately, there’s a new horror flick out today but it’s not playing in any movie house. For want of a better title, we’ll call it The Genetic Time Bomb and I assure you that this “movie” is more terrifying and more dangerous than anything you have ever seen on the silver screen.
Some of the most unimaginable experiments are currently taking place in the laboratories of biotech companies worldwide. In China, they are putting human genes into tomatoes and peppers to make them grow more quickly. (Mmm. . . yummy!) In Canada geneticists are putting human genes into fish to speed growth as well. (Pass me my fishing pole.) Several companies are racing each other to place human genes into pigs so as to genetically match organs for human transplantation. (Oink. . . oink! Sorry, it must be my pig heart talking.) In Australia, they are utilizing genes from human growth hormone to produce more milk in cows. (Excuse me! Does this ice cream taste a bit like Uncle Harry, or is it just my imagination?) Several companies in the U.S. have experimented with adding human genes to chickens in order to produce higher yielding and better quality meat. (What should we call this bird – a chickman?)
None of these products are currently approved for sale yet, but the fact that widespread studies are being conducted with genes across the species barrier should be rather alarming to anyone with a conscience. While biotech firms are reluctant to admit to the possible approval of crops modified with human genes, they are not so hesitant about admitting to cross-species gene splicing experiments being performed in their labs. The latest is human animal hybrids now sanctioned by the U.S. government.
