Forskolin: A Breakthrough Weight Loss Root Extract That Provides Fast Results

Forskolin is a relatively new weight loss ingredient that is making huge waves in the supplement industry. Scientists are now confirming its benefits for weight loss, and the research is impressive and noteworthy. While Forskolin has been used in traditional and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries for all sorts of ailments ranging from allergies, skin conditions, painful menstrual periods, IBS, urinary tract infections, bladder infections, high blood pressure, cardiovascular support, trouble sleeping, sexual problems, etc., Forskolin’s most promising effects seem to be with weight loss because it helps increase the body’s metabolism. Forskolin is a labdane diterpene that is produced by the Indian Coleus plant (Coleus forskohlii). Forskolin is commonly used as a tool in biochemistry to raise levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in the study and research of cell physiology. Forskolin activates the enzyme adenylyl cyclase and increases intracellular levels of cAMP. cAMP is an important second messenger necessary for the proper biological response of cells to hormones and other extracellular signals. It is required for cell communication in the hypothalamus/pituitary gland axis and for the feedback control of hormones. [i]

The chemical constituents of Coleus Forskohlii have been shown to have excellent antioxidant activity and acetylcholinesterase inhibition. A recent PubMed search yielded 17,256 studies on this plant compound. There are over 35 known biological activities for Forskolin alone. One of the most interesting, researched and prospectively helpful is its ability to promote healthy cells through the enzyme Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate (cAMP). This enzyme is a cellular messenger; you can think of it as the intelligence of the cell for when a cell is carrying out its function properly, high amounts of cAMP are found, and when a cell is not functioning properly, low amounts are found. Low cAMP levels are found in hypersensitized mast cells and other unhealthy cells that will not burn their stored fat.  [ii] 

A US NIH Published Study Indicates That Forskolin Can Decrease Mean Body Fat In Men 4.14%

Forskolin is purported to promote weight loss by enhancing lipolysis and reducing appetite. Forskolin was evaluated in 12-week, randomized, double-blind trial involving 30 overweight men (BMI ≥26). In this study, forskolin did not affect body weight, but it did significantly decrease mean body fat by 4.14% compared with placebo (0.96%). [iii]

In another published study they concluded that Forskolin is a possible therapeutic agent for the management and treatment of obesity. Here is a summation of that study. 

Body composition and hormonal adaptations associated with forskolin consumption in overweight and obese men.

OBJECTIVE:

This study examined the effect of forskolin on body composition, testosterone, metabolic rate, and blood pressure in overweight and obese (BMI > or = 26 kg/m(2)) men. 

RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURE:

Thirty subjects (forskolin, n = 15; placebo, n = 15) were studied in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study for 12 weeks. 

RESULTS:

Forskolin was shown to elicit favorable changes in body composition by significantly decreasing body fat percentage (BF%) and fat mass (FM) as determined by DXA compared with the placebo group (p < or = 0.05). Additionally, forskolin administration resulted in a change in bone mass for the 12-week trial compared with the placebo group (p < or = 0.05). There was a trend toward a significant increase for lean body mass in the forskolin group compared with the placebo group (p = 0.097). Serum free testosterone levels were significantly increased in the forskolin group compared with the placebo group (p < or = 0.05). The actual change in serum total testosterone concentration was not significantly different among groups, but it increased 16.77 +/- 33.77% in the forskolin group compared with a decrease of 1.08 +/- 18.35% in the placebo group. 

DISCUSSION:

Oral ingestion of forskolin (250 mg of 10% forskolin extract twice a day) for a 12-week period was shown to favorably alter body composition while concurrently increasing bone mass and serum free testosterone levels in overweight and obese men. The results indicate that forskolin is a possible therapeutic agent for the management and treatment of obesity. [iv]

The University of Kansas Study Shows Great Results With Forskolin 

One of the most rigorous and promising studies concerning supplemental forskolin was conducted by researchers at the University of Kansas a few years ago. [v] They found that overweight and obese men lost more than 7.8 times more body fat, added 35 percent more bone mass, and increased their bioavailable free testosterone by almost 34 percent more when they added 250 mg of a 10 percent forskolin-containing coleus to their otherwise unchanged daily lives, twice per day. In other words, 50 mg of total forskolin per day—as compared to subjects who consumed a placebo—realized a significant improvement in both body composition and testosterone levels. [vi]

Dr. Oz typically vets products he features on his show with his excellent staff of researchers quite thoroughly before he ever does an episode.
